Episode 40: Complacent is the one thing you should never be, with Hannah Rad

Hannah Rad is a content producer and on-air talent across TV, radio, and other mediums. She is the music and lifestyle host of the ESPN X Games and previously hosted shows and events for REVOLT, MTV, Red Bull, SiriusXM radio, and the Electronic Music Awards.

Hannah grew up incredibly independent and with a no-one-can-do-it-better-than-me mindset. She tells us how she hustled to get to where she is in her career, and about the one time she felt a little too comfortable (and how it blew up in her face). She tells us when she experiences self-doubt, why she doesn’t believe in being complacent, and why she will always name herself as her #1 fan.

Discussed in this Episode:

  • How she operates: She doesn’t reach out for a lot of help and likes to do things by herself
  • Where she grew up: A small town outside of Pittsburgh, PA
  • Her first job out of college: Doing marketing for a small hotel company in NYC
  • Her first gig in entertainment: Hosting her own radio show for five years
  • A gig she didn’t think twice about taking: Working for Puff Daddy
  • When she experiences self-doubt: Everyday, I think “Why am I here and what did I do to deserve to get here?”
  • A phrase she’s removed from her vernacular: I can’t believe I get paid to do this
  • How long she preps for an interview: 30 hours
  • Why she started sharing her story this year: She encourages her guests to be authentic, and believes the only way to do so herself is to share her story
  • Who encouraged her to “go for it”: Herself
  • Her ten-year-old vision of success: Having video games in every room of the house
  • The time she fell flat on her face: When she got fired, had a show cancelled, left her agency, and fired her manager within a month of moving to LA
  • What her team looks like: One attorney and two agents
  • When she experiences PTSD: Every day—but she’s learned to let the negativity in for a second, then kick it out
  • How she feels about the hustle: If everything were roses all the time, it gets you into a place of complacency
  • What she wishes she knew five years ago: That it’s ok to admit failure, defeat, and loss
  • What she wants to be known for: Telling stories in a smart, insightful way
  • The best interview she ever gave: Interviewing a woman with RAINN (Rape Abuse & Incest National Network)
  • What she looks for in a story: The struggle or battle you overcame in your life
  • Her A-Cup: Thousands, but she’s still waiting for the one that will define her
  • How many hours she works in a day: 12-13 (“I never stop; I work in my sleep.”)
  • Her biggest fan: Herself
  • Her biggest ingredient toward self-care: Working out
  • What wakes her up in the middle of the night: Work dreams
  • What being a woman means to her: Everything. Being strong, empathetic, powerful, and doing shit no matter what
